Gil Rigell, who served as The Evergreen State College interim women's basketball head coach for 16 games during the 2016-17 season, has had the interim tag removed from his title following a national search.

The appointment was announced by Monica Heuer, the school's associate director for athletics.

Rigell led the Geoducks to a 4-12 record during his stint with the team after replacing Jen Schooler, who resigned during her third season.

"We are excited to have Gil Rigell as a permanent member of our staff," Heuer said. "He has proven to be a great coach, recruiter, and communicator. He has had great success in retaining and developing student athletes over the years and we are excited to have him continue this work at The Evergreen State College."

For 10 seasons, Rigell was a highly successful women's basketball head coach at Pacific Lutheran University from, leading his teams to an overall 196-69 record and five outright or shared Northwest Conference championships from 1997-2007. His PLU teams participated in six national tournaments, twice advancing to NCAA Division III Elite Eight status.
