MEN'S SOCCER MATCH NOTES: The Evergreen State College (9-1-4 overall, 8-1-4 CCC regular season) plays the University of Great Falls (9-7-0 overall, 8-5-0 CCC regular season) at 8 p.m. Friday in a quarterfinal round game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championships being held at Willamalane Sports Complex in Springfield, Ore. The winner of that match advanced to a Saturday evening semifinal round contest against an opponent to be determined, while the loser sees it's 2016 season come to an end.
TOURNAMENT WEB SITE: The Cascade Collegiate Conference soccer championship web site, which includes links to live stats, video streams and results, can be found
here. Because of technical issues at the tournament site, not all of the matches will have a live video stream.
DIGGING DEEP ON THE GEODUCKS: Evergreen, making its third consecutive conference postseason tournament appearance and its fourth in the past five seasons, enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed after tying Southern Oregon for third place in the 2016 CCC standings. The Geoducks get the No. 3 seed over the Raiders by virtue of a point system tiebreaker. Prior to losing a 1-0 decision at Corban in a thriller to end the regular season, Evergreen had scored at least one goal in every match this season and had been unbeaten in 15 consecutive contests dating back to the 2015 campaign. The Geoducks' .786 winning percentage at this point in the season is better than the school record .778 recorded by the 2015 team that advanced to the conference tournament semifinals before losing in penalty kicks to eventual champion Rocky Mountain.
NATIONAL POLL: The Geoducks received 10 votes in the NAIA Top 25 national poll this week, which marks the third consecutive week that they have been in the "receiving votes" category.
GEODUCKS BY THE NUMBERS: Evergreen has tallied 28 goals and 20 assists while giving up 13 goals on just three assists. Yes, that's correct, three assists for Geoducks foes this season. The Geoducks have taken 91 corner kicks compared to 60 for opponents. Individually, freshman midfielder
Miguel Viramontes (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee HS) is the leading scorer with 13 points from a team-best five goals and three assists, followed by sophomore defender
Jordan Zimmerman (Olympia, Wash./Capital HS) with nine points from four goals and one assist and sophomore forward
Ryan Porch (Austin, Texas/Vandegrift HS) with nine points from two goals and a team-best five assists. Other top goal scorers are junior midfielder
Kevin Elliott-McCrea (Portland, Ore./Trillium Charter School) and senior forward
Charlie Kramer (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) with three apiece, while junior midfielder
Jake Zimmerman (Olympia, Wash./Capital HS) is second on the team with four assists. A total of 13 different Geoducks have scored goals and 10 have contributed assists this season. The goalkeeping duo of senior
Thomas Clark (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish HS) and sophomore
Ben Stevenson (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie HS) have been stellar this season, Clark with a 0.87 goals against average and two shutouts and Stevenson with a 0.86 GAA with three saves. Junior
Issa Hassan (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS), who plays holding midfielder alongside Elliott-McCrea, has been stellar throughout the 2016 campaign.
ABOUT GREAT FALLS: The Argos tied Carroll College for fifth place in the CCC regular season standings but get the No. 6 seed by tiebreaker. Over their last 11 matches the Argos have won eight and lost three, including a 4-2 defeat to Evergreen during the teams' regular season meeting in Tumwater on Oct. 16. This is an Argos team that scores lots of goals – 39, to be exact, in 16 matches. Mohamed Oulare leads the way with seven and Adrian Gomez has six, and a total of 13 players have put the ball in the back of the next for UGF this season Camilo Martinez and Christopher Chavez are tied for the team lead with six assists apiece. Marc Girones has played the most minutes in goal and has a 1.20 goals against average and two shutouts, but it was Henrik Sohn and his 2.00 goals against average that played against the Geoducks. It should be noted that Great Falls lost in the CCC tournament championship game last year but still advanced to the national tournament.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE: In addition to the Evergreen versus Great Falls contest, other quarterfinal match ups look like this: No. 1 seed Rocky Mountain (12-3-2, 10-1-2) versus No. 8 Oregon Tech (11-6-1, 6-6-1) and No. 2 Corban (16-2-0, 11-2-0) versus No. 7 Northwest (11-7, 7-6), both at 5 p.m., and No. 4 Southern Oregon (11-3-2, 9-2-2) versus Carroll (10-8-0, 8-5-0) at 8 p.m. The semifinal games are scheduled for Saturday night with the highest remaining seed playing the lowest remaining seed in one contest and the second highest remaining seed facing the second lowest remaining seed in the other. The semifinal winners play for the conference tournament title, and with it an automatic berth in the NAIA men's soccer national championship, on Monday, Nov. 7.
MORE TOURNAMENT NOTES: Rocky Mountain and Corban tied for the 2016 regular season title, with Rocky receiving the league's first automatic berth in the NAIA national tournament by virtue of its regular season win over the Warriors. Should Rocky Mountain win the conference tournament, the runner-up would receive the automatic bid to nationals. Rocky Mountain won the 2015 regular season and conference tournament titles, advancing to the national quarterfinal round before being ousted. Great Falls and Corban also played in the 2015 NAIA national championships, both losing first round contests.
