Box Score The Evergreen State College and 12th-ranked Rocky Mountain College battled through 110 minutes of entertaining play Saturday afternoon before settling for a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer action at Geoduck Pitch.
As a result of the tie the Bears (15-1-1 overall, 11-1-1 CCC) assured themselves of the conference regular season title. They finished league play with 34 points from 13 matches and no team can catch them. Evergreen (11-2-1, 8-2-1) temporarily moves into second place with 25 points, one point ahead of Corban, which plays a late game at fourth-place Warner Pacific.
The match featured outstanding skill, a total of 25 shots, 38 fouls and five yellow cards. And while b
oth teams had scoring chances, in the end Evergreen goalkeeper Angel Guerra made just three saves compared to two for Rocky Mountain keeper Cole Catlin. Neither team managed a shot in the first 17 minutes as most of the action occurred in the middle third of the field. Matthew Thomas got off the first three shots for Rocky, which got off all of its first-half shots before Evergreen had its first attempt at goal. The final of its three efforts almost resulted in a goal, but Catlin dove to his right to keep
Juan Lopez from scoring on a goal mouth scramble.
The second half and overtime provided several other good opportunities for both sides. Evergreen's
Issa Hassan blazed over the bar after slicing through the defense with about 30 minutes left in regulation, and about three minutes later Rocky's Steven Forbes hit the cross bar on a free kick from about 25 yards out.
In the final 16 minutes both
Willie Spurr and
Ryan Porch headed wide left, and late in the first overtime Forbes again hit the cross bar after attacking from the right wing.
The final shot tally showed Rocky with 14 total, three on goal, while the Geoducks had 11 shots, two of which were on goal. The visitors enjoyed a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Evergreen, which has punched its ticket to the conference postseason tournament slated for Nov. 11, 12 and 14 in Springfield, Ore., closes out its regular season schedule with games against Northwest Christian on Friday and Corban on Saturday. Kick off for both contests is slated for noon.
